Many ask how do I justify minimalism and being a business owner and the response I always have is it is the perfect choice. Why would you not want to own your own business and be self employed? There are so many advantages particularly when it comes to living a minimalist lifestyle as I do.
Some people assume living a minimalist lifestyle equates to being cash poor. Nothing could be further from the truth. For me, living a minimalist lifestyle just feels right because I am only using natural resources that I need to use. I don’t buy anything unless I truly need it and choose to recycle as much as possible in the way of furniture, clothing, etc. My house is streamlined and only has what we need – nothing more, nothing less.
I have been self employed for more than ten years now and would not have it any other way. I have several businesses all very successful. Because I have chosen a minimalist lifestyle to complement my self employment, I am able to give a tremendous amount back to the community. Giving back is extremely important to me and after family and friends, my main priority.
Our family not only supports local charities but national organizations. Our passions are to help kids and animals and those are the charities we choose to support. Taking it a step further from supporting animal rescues, we have 5 rescue dogs, 3 rescue horses and 1 rescue cat all of whom “saved” us because we could not imagine living our lives without these amazing animals in them. If we were not living a minimalist lifestyle, it would be very difficult to take care of our animals especially our horses when you consider that if you live in the city and have to board your horse, you are looking at a minimum of $500 monthly and that does not include the farrier that comes out every 6 weeks or so to take care of your horses feet and the annual vet visits. We are able to take care of our animals easily right on our property.
We live in a rural part of Florida and have our business operations directly on our land which also sustains our animals. We do not spend money on leasing a warehouse or on gas to drive to work which results in more money saved. We choose to plant a garden for fresh fruits and vegetables, we buy our meat locally from humane farms which do not use any steroids or hormones. We have a well that provides us spring water on an as needed basis meaning the well pumps it to us when we turn the water on – it’s that simple.
Because we have chosen to live a minimalist lifestyle, we are much less encumbered than folks that have to punch a time clock every day. We are not stressed and not only are we happy, we have happy customers who are proud to do business with our company because of the way we live. To us, there is no other choice other than being small business owners because it allows us to live the life we WANT to live instead of a life we DREAD living.
If you are interested in being self employed but not sure where to start, email me. I’ll be happy to listen and provide any help I can – another benefit of being self-employed 🙂
Blessings,
Denise
