As I’ve written many times, I am beyond blessed that I am self-employed and grateful for the life I live. But if I were to do it again I would probably start my minimalist journey before self-employment. It would have made life so much simpler. Every decision I make each day, is a direct result of my minimalist lifestyle. 5 years ago, this would not have been the case. It was too easy to say “I need this” or I want that” whether it was personal or business. Either way though a minimalist lifestyle and self employment is by far the best way to live a simple life.
Stepping into a minimalist lifestyle is not to be taken lightly and we strongly recommend you read our blog and others so that you have the information you need. However, if becoming an entrepreneur and self-employed is your goal, the minimalist lifestyle will get you there much more quickly than if you don’t cut back. Also living a minimalist lifestyle will help you get out and STAY out of debt. (See Ready To Get Out Of Debt Once And For All?)
Before leaping into starting a business, I strongly recommend you have at minimum three months worth of living expenses in reserve; preferably six months before you leave a job that you currently have. When you live a minimalist lifestyle you will quickly find that you are not spending as much money as you used to. You do not need as much “stuff” so you are not spending money on that unneeded “stuff.” See the big picture? You will be living comfortably with what you have and only purchase what you need for food and shelter.
Think about it. Do you really need another new purse or pair of new shoes during the next six months? You know you already have more than enough in the closet already and probably quite a bit that you aren’t even wearing. To move even quicker, sell what you are not wearing and add what you make from the sale to your reserve.
The key to being successful in ANYTHING in life is commitment and consistency. If you want to be self-employed, commit to being self-employed. Decide what you will be doing and write it down. Simply putting your plans in writing signals a mental commitment in your brain. Make sure that what you choose to do is something you will enjoy doing. If you do something simply for the money, you will quickly lose interest. Trust me. This I have learned first hand. When I worked from my heart, my businesses took off because I enjoyed doing what needed to be done on a day to day basis.
Finally, take the time every day to be grateful for where you are right now. Give thanks to your lifestyle that is supporting your dreams. Give thanks to family and friends that are helping you build your business. You will find that when you are grateful, things will fall into place and you will soon be living the life you want.
Blessings,
Denise
