Yes Money Does Buy Happiness
This is the time of year that many of us minimalists truly dread. One of my recent posts was about the season of excess – and I stand by that post. Today, however, my post is from the other side of the coin and how I am truly, truly grateful for my minimalist lifestyle and the money I have been able to save.
You see, not too many years back, I would have been out there in the stores shopping like a crazy person. You’ve seen those crazy people out there haven’t you? I’m not so sure you would have seen me on Black Friday because I have never “liked” shopping but I definitely would have been wrapped up in getting the latest and greatest “stuff” for my family and friends. Fast forward a few years and this year I have yet to step foot in one store. Can you say what a relief with me?
The holidays should be about enjoying time with family and friends and being grateful for what you already have in your life – not wanting the latest and greatest device. Think about it. I have an Ipad and use it quite often especially when traveling. It weighs a ton compared to the newest version. But here is the kicker – IT WORKS FINE. I don’t need a new one when the one I have does everything I want it to do. I don’t feel the need to run out and upgrade every time a new version is introduced – which seems to be every 6 months. I don’t spend my money on those things any longer. Because of this minimalist frame of mind I have, I have been able to pay off most of my debt (now working on the properties), able to build my fitness business to put away funds for the slow time of year my seasonal business has and most importantly, I have the opportunity to help those in need.
This change in my lifestyle has afforded me the opportunity to give back to my community and I am proud to say I do so all year long. However, during the holidays, the need is many times greater. My husband and I donate toys, food, cash, and time to those that are not as fortunate. Toys you say? Yes toys. In this world we live in, many kids often go without not only during the holidays but every single day of the year. The worst part is these kids know and understand about Christmas. They know that their friends from school are receiving gifts under the Christmas tree. But many times they do not. It doesn’t matter if these kids are on the “nice” list or not – there is no way for their families to put even one gift under the tree. If I can give make a difference in just one child’s life on Christmas morning, you can bet I will do so.
I challenge you all to do the same. Take a toy to the local Toys For Tots drop off centers.(Click here to read How To Declutter Your Kids Room) Drop food at your local food bank. Give a little extra to the animal rescues. Even $1 will make a difference. You see? Money does buy happiness. Together we CAN make a difference. Let’s do it.
Blessings,
Denise
