How Do I Get Organized At Home? Top Items You Can Declutter Now!

When trying to become more organized the first thing you’ll need to do is downsize what you keep on hand. One of the biggest reasons why someone would have difficulty being organized has to do with the amount of belongings they have cluttering a specific space. So how about a very quick decluttering session? Below, we’ll tell you some of the top things you can declutter right now from the five most used rooms in a home. If you’re decluttering a particular area in your home, look below to see if we’ve covered that space. If not, you can always modify the lists below to fit the space you’re working on.

Please note: The items listed below are only suggestions and may not work for you.

In Your Bedroom:

  •  Night stands. Totally up to you, but for myself, I removed these. This was just a way for me to pile my junk on the table before going to bed. Another option is to switch to a smaller night stand, one that’s just wide enough to fit an alarm clock and your cell phone.
  • Clothing that doesn’t fit. Yup – here’s a super quick and easy one to declutter. You already don’t wear it, so why hold onto it?
  • Throw Pillows. Do you go through the process each night to carefully remove the pillows from your bed, store them, and then put them back the next morning? Instead, why not declutter these and keep only one or two (if you feel you must have a little decorative component).

In Your Kitchen:

  •  Single use items or items that only serve one purpose. If there’s an item you only keep around for one particular reason (grapefruit spoons, melon ballers, etc.) these can easily be replaced by a multi-purpose item.
  • Worn Out or Chipped Plates. Plates that are worn out, chipped, or overly grungy could be harboring harmful bacteria in those little nooks and crannies.
  • Pans that are no longer functional. Do you have pots or pans with food so baked on you’re no longer able to use them? Toss them.

In Your Bathroom:

  • Empty Bottles. Do you have a stash of empty bottles for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc.? Perfect! Declutter those.
  • Toilet paper holder. Sure, it looks cute, but is it something you really need? If not, now is the time to toss it.
  • Worn out towels. If you’re looking for a quick thing to declutter, how about those worn out, holey towels that have just become rags?

In Your Living Room:

  • End Tables or Coffee Table. If you have an accumulation of end tables or a coffee table thats stacked up 5 inches tall with clutter, the easiest way to get rid of the clutter is to eliminate the enabler. In this case, the coffee or end table.
  •  Magazine rack. Consider this – when you keep a magazine rack, that only gives you an excuse to accumulate magazines. And if you’re like me (with wayyyy too many magazines) that’s the last thing you need!
  • Throw Pillows and Blankets. Having a few of these on hands is great for comfort, but having a huge collection of them can turn your otherwise clutter free living space into a cluttered one.

In Your Office:

  • Full Notebooks. Do you have a habit of using a notebook up to the very last page, but then hold onto it for no reason? Welp, now is the perfect time to declutter those!
  • Duplicates. How many pens, pencils, staplers, tape, etc. do you really need? How about donating some of those duplicates to a local school or library.
  • The File Cabinet. With the Cloud, and many virtual storage solutions available now, it’s very easy to transition your filing cabinet to a virtual one, and then only keep the hard copies of those MUST HAVE items (such as the financial documents or tax documentation).

Other items you can quickly declutter around the house:

  • Anything broken, worn out, or beyond repair.
  • Decorative pieces that have gone unloved.
  • Items not used in over a year.
  • Items just not worth the time or effort to maintain.
