Why You Should Declutter Electronics

Why You Should Declutter Electronics

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

When we think of decluttering we don’t often include electronics in the mix. Before you go another day ignoring your electronics during your decluttering sessions, here are three reasons you should declutter electronics:

One of the biggest reasons we hold on to electronics is because we focus on the price tag instead of the actual value of the item in terms of usefulness and space. We spend thousands of dollars every year on the latest and greatest gadgets, only to have them become obsolete in a matter of months. How many gadgets do you have lying around that you’re avoiding tossing? If we took the price tag out of the mix, how many electronics in your home do you realistically need?

Another big reason we tend to “hoard” electronics is because we don’t know how to easily dispose of them. Fortunately, many businesses now offer the ability to recycle electronics right at their store. Stores such as Best Buy provide recycle bins just outside their front door where you can drop off your broken or outdated gadgets to have them safely recycled.

Once we have eliminated the price tag and found a convenient way to recycle old and broken electronics, what else is stopping us from getting rid of an old, outdated gadget? Electronics don’t tend to take up a lot of room, so we don’t really consider them to be clutter, when really anything that is going unused and takes up space is clutter. Even though these items take up little space, the fact is when we move we still need to package them up, carry them out the door, and move them to a new home. Because they’re electronics (and therefore fragile) we are more likely to put in extra effort to package them carefully, wasting time and materials on an item that we will rarely, if ever, use again.

There you have it! Three of the most common reasons we hold on to electronics debunked! So before you tuck that old mp3 player back in to your closet, think about what is stopping you from donating or recycling it. Then give it the boot!

Have a wonderful evening, friends!
