The main question I always get when people find out I’m self-employed and work from home, is how was I able to make it happen. Many dream of owning their own business but never get to the next step of actually doing it. My journey to being able to work at home started many years before I began my minimalist lifestyle. If I could do it all again I would have been underway with my minimalist journey before I launched my first business venture because it would have made things so much easier from a financial standpoint.
If you have already started your minimalist journey, you are in a better position to start your business than I was when I became self employed. My mindset was not where it needed to be which ultimately caused many delays to my being successful. Minimalism is a way of living and that way of living is nothing but beneficial when starting or growing a business.
If you have not yet or might not embrace minimalism into your life, what I first recommend is that you at least take a look at what minimalism has to offer before you plow head first into launching a business. When you begin a business, expenses will definitely outweigh income. As minimalists, our view is that we do not bring items into our home that we do not need. A direct result AND benefit of that mindset is that we spend less money. This lesson was one that I had to learn the hard way so if this one point helps someone to take a good hard look at where they are spending their money, my hard knock lesson would have been worth it.
Now that you have taken a step back and really looked at where you are currently spending your money, can you cut back expenditures and devote the time you will need to create a successful business? If the answer is yes, the next question is what will you do? Take a moment and think about the questions below then write out your answers.
- What do you enjoy doing?
- Can you build a business around what you enjoy doing? If not, go back to the first question and start over considering other options.
- What experience can you bring from your work background?
- What education do you have that you can build a business around?
- Do you want to be able to work from anywhere or will you be more likely to work from your home? Let me explain this question. I have three businesses right now – 2 are based around my writing and consulting while the 3rd one is a brick and mortar business that is operated from our home. I prefer to be able to work from anywhere where my husband is more content to stay at home so he is the main operator of our brick and mortar business.
These five questions are just to get you thinking about what you want to do. You may already have something in mind but you have not written it down yet. If that is the case, it is time to put the pen to the paper and start bringing your dreams to life.
One final thought from me to you. It will not be easy and there will be times you think about quitting. Push through. The rewards of being in control of your time and money will outweigh the hurtles you will encounter. Blessings,
