So are you loving your minimalist lifestyle? I certainly am. I feel so much freer and happier than I ever did accumulating so much C R A P. I’ve also taking my minimalism into my office as I found that minimalist principles are perfect for work and I really work better with not only a clear mind but a
clear desk too. Here are a few tips that I have found very helpful for keeping myself on track during the day:
- Most important tip I have? Touch any paper one time. If you don’t have time to deal with whatever it is, don’t touch it – leave it in your inbox for when you do have time. This includes files, taxes, orders, trade journals – whatever is in paper form. When you pick something up you are picking it up with the intention to do whatever you need to do with it. Period.
- Emails – what a time eater they are. I only check my business emails in the morning and in the afternoon before I am leaving the office for the day. I have never had a true emergency situation with something waiting for me in my emails. Pick your times and stick with them.
- Do not allow people to just show up and sit down in your workspace. The “got a minute” meetings generally end up taking 20 – 30 minutes. Schedule times when you will meet with your employees or piers. If they do show up outside of a scheduled time, remind them of your meeting times and ask if it is an emergency. 99% of the time it is not an emergency.
- Create a list of your top 5 tasks that you want to get done the next day before you leave the office. This helps for two reasons. First you have written down what you have to do the next day and this signals and end to your current work day – good for you mentally. Second, when you have your day planned you know what you have to do the next day and it will keep you on task and productive. If you do not finish the last thing on your list, you move it to number 1 the next day. Most of the time you will complete your list and will be able to do other projects but only put 5 things on your list.
These four little bullet points are what keep me productive and able to run 3 successful businesses AND still have a life. Hope they help you too.
Blessings,
Denise
