The Best Gift For The Holidays

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas. It is hard to believe that 2012 is almost over, isn’t it? I am in a really good place today and hope you are too. What is the best gift for the holidays? More time with loved one. A life of minimalism has helped me achieve just that. Below are a few points I am going to work on that I thought might help you on your journey:

  • The first place I started when I began my journey? The main living area. My house has an open concept and the kitchen, living room and dining areas are all one big space. I tackled this large area first and have never regretted this decision. We live in a rural area on a dirt road and have 5 rescue dogs and one cat that enter and exit the house via doggy door. It is much easier to keep this area clean since it has been uncluttered. All surfaces are clean which makes dusting a breeze.
  • Closet. My closet is – I’m just going to say it – stuffed to the brim and a big mess. It seems like when I don’t want to deal with something or make the decision whether to get rid of it or keep it, it ends up in the closet. It is top of my list and I will start by cleaning out the boxes that are on the bottom of the closet then work my way up. I have lost 30 pounds this past year also so many of my clothes are going to friends and to Goodwill to be recycled.
  • The laundry room. I was lucky that this house does not have a garage and that it has a laundry room. I have cleaned out the closet in the laundry room but now it’s time to move the appliances and do a thorough cleaning along with clearing out the many boxes that are sitting on the shelf. One I finish, there will only be the washer, dryer and laundry in this room. Imagine that.
I have already taken care of the bedrooms and most of the closets outside of my closet but if I hadn’t already, those would be the next rooms that I would work on. I must say that it is a wonderful, wonderful feeling to know that you own your possessions and that they do not own you. Not only do I save a significant amount of time on maintaining my home, I save money too.
Please be kind to each other this wonderful holiday season.
Denise
