Ahhhhhhh.  How does reading that make you feel?  For me that sound is a sound of peace and less stress after switching to a minimalist lifestyle.  Was the journey easy?  Absolutely not and it is not finished yet but every day I feel so much better with the decision to live simple and with less material things.  If you’re ready to say “Ahhhhhh” this article will help you get rid of the stuff!

Is my house empty? Again, no it is not.  My husband does not view minimalism the same way I do and that’s okay because we are all on our own journey.  He does enjoy the clean space in the combination kitchen/dining/living areas and how much easier it is to maintain.  We have separate closets and if you mention cleaning out the “stuff” in his closet, it’s enough to send him into a tailspin yet he likes how the closet I use is clean and organized. I just told him when he’s ready to organize his closet to let me know and I leave it at that.

Just imagine how good you will feel when you get rid of the stuff weighing you down.

It’s not easy to get rid of things especially if they have an emotional attachment to them (click here to read why you should clean up your personal items).  I personally still have both of my daughter’s First Communion dresses.  Why? I have no idea but I know that at this time, I am not able to part with them so they hang in the closet.  On the flip side, my mother sent me a box of memorabilia of my growing up years including quite a few school report cards.  I honestly don’t know what to do with this box and because I don’t know what to do with it, I have opted to leave it sitting on the top shelf of the closet until I figure it out.  For me, if I am not 100% sure I want to get rid of something, I don’t get rid of it and this has never failed me in my minimalism journey.

You can see that decluttering to live simply is not always cut and dry is it? Family heirlooms are often passed down through the generations and although they may not have monetary value, they do have sentimental value.  Taking your time as you move through your decluttering process ensures that you will be happy with the end result.  Never get rid of something unless you are 100% sure you can live without it.  Eliminate the items that you are not attached to emotionally and are taking up room is the best way to begin.   One drawer, one closet or one room at a time until YOU are happy with the result and go “Ahhh” when you walk into a room.

Blessings,

Denise
