I have heard more times than I care to count that my home does not “look minimalist” because it is colorful and decorated – they usually tell me how uncluttered the space is in the same breath. Fact is, minimalist interior decor does not need to be boring in order to be minimalist. Kick that thought out of your head that everything needs to be white and spotless 24/7 (unless that’s your preference).

If you’re starting to feel like your home is bland or drab, try these tips:

    1. Switch it up – Rearranging your furniture is a quick and easy way to give a space new life without adding to it. You may be surprised by how different a space looks simply by moving the couch to a different wall, or rotating the bed to a different angle.
    2. Add color –  Just a small pop of color can transform a room, and you don’t need to splurge purchase in order to do so. Pillows, for example, are a GREAT way to add color without adding a ton of clutter. Best of all, whenever you want to change the space again, using a pillow case is an inexpensive and minimal clutter way of doing so. Afraid of using your bright red pillows out of fear they may be too bold? Try it out – if you’re not happy with the way it looks, change it.
    3. Opt for quality over convenience/price – When you’re making a new purchase always opt for quality. A well built piece will last longer and maintain its good looks in the long run, helping to keep your space looking spiffy. Other options to consider are vintage, retro, or antique furniture pieces. I have a dresser that’s almost 100 years old, given to me from a family friend over 15 years ago, and it still looks amazing.

4. Repaint furniture – The second bullet point above can also apply here. I’ve been known to repaint furniture pieces in order to add something new to a space. My coffee table, for example, has been around for years and used to be a cream/green combo. Now it’s turquoise. Instead of buying a brand new one, I simply painted it. This is a great way to save money and limit the clutter that winds up in landfills.

5.  Use flowers/plants – One of the easiest, cheapest, and clutterless ways to add to a space is to add flowers or house plants. A bouquet of sunflowers on your dining room table not only adds color, it also helps to boost your mood. If you LOVE being outdoors like I do, fresh flowers and houseplants are a great way to bring natural elements inside. Let’s not forget how plants can also improve the air quality in your home.
