Every day, I take 15 minutes mid-day to reflect on the morning and to get ready creatively for the afternoon.  Knowing today was a day I had planned to write an essay for this blog on minimalist living, I felt my mind wandering during my 15 minute contemplation.  First I was thinking how little time it takes me to clean the house each day. It’s possible for me to literally clean the kitchen, dining room and living room which is an open area in about 10 – 15 minutes depending on if I have to run a mop over the floor. (Click here to read minimalism in the kitchen.) If I mop, it’s closer to 15 minutes. That’s it 15 minutes.  The reason?  There is nothing in my way.  My counters are clear, my floors are clear, tables are clear and I only have a few important photos and pictures on the wall.

My mind wandered to my bathroom and I started chuckling.  The reason?  About 5 years ago, my counters, vanity, and shower were loaded with “beauty” products.  Today there is nothing on my counter except the cup that holds the toothbrushes.  In the vanity are daily “essentials” which are easy to get to and include toothpaste, deodorant, and face cream and that’s pretty much it. What a difference! Don’t get me wrong.  I do have make-up and perfume but I’ve pared it down to those that I use and no longer keep bottles and bottles of lotions and potions that were used maybe one time then were pushed to the back of vanity to collect dust.  I bet at one time I had at least 20 bottles of perfume and do you know how many I used?  One.  My favorite that I started using in my late teens and still use to this day

Minimalism in the bathroom is probably the BEST place to be minimal.

And yes I do wear make-up but no longer every day – but I do have it on hand for when I do want to wear it. My face cream is a daily staple because it has SPF 18 sun protection built in – 2 products in 1. So today I thought I would give you a list of my “must” have toiletry products in my bathroom so you can compare it with what you have in yours.  Are you ready?  Here you go:

On counter:  Toothbrushes in holder.

In vanity:  Extra toilet paper, sunblock, make-up, perfume, deodorant, face cream, towels.

In shower:  Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Poof.

And there you have it.  Do you know how freeing it is to NOT be persuaded by all the commercials and ads that you NEED to have this face cream for wrinkles – and think of the money I no longer spend on these products.  This shampoo for color hair.  This perfume to be sexy.  I know what I like and that’s all that I have.  No more wasted money on “beauty” products that didn’t do anything but beautify the selling companies bank accounts.

Drop us a line and let us know what’s in your bathroom – we’d love to compare notes 😉

Blessings,

Denise
